BARC Interview experience

This post will be regarding my  interview experience at BARC : ( this post will be long, so please be patient )
Its been almost 2 years now, so i might not be able to recall all the questions that were asked, so please excuse, but i will give some tips which might be worth reading

Initial tips : ( these are based on the procedure that I had faced, dont know if it has changed now )
1. Try your maximum to book the morning slot for interview, because the interviews can get quite long. On your interview day, they will make you fill a form when you reach the hall, make sure you fill it out quickly and carefully, and get your biometric verified fast, because many people would have booked slots for morning and the order in which they call depends on the order in which the form is submitted. This is my personal opinion.

2. Make sure you are cool, dont bother about people studying around you in the last minute.

Experience :

I had booked the morning slot, and was second in line in my panel ( there were 4 panels I think for EEE branch ), the first person had an interview of almost 1.5 hours. I went inside, there were 7 pleasant  looking people, they asked a bit about my education background, and asked me if I had changed my hairstyle, as i had long hair in the photo, I told them I had trimmed my hair for the interview. Then they asked me why you dint get selected in the NPCIL interview. All these things they ask to make us comfortable, Once we settle down, then starts the test.

You have to remember BARC interview are different from other interviews, first of , they do not expect you to give a spot on answer, what they want is whether you are ready to approach the problem in a proper manner, they expect a wise technical discussion with  you, this is not a rapid fire round. The panel is filled with knowledgeable people who will help you with tips in case you are going in the wrong direction and will encourage you if your in the right path.

First they gave a white paper and a pencil and asked me to put down 3- 4 subjects that I liked, you can put specific areas also if you like, for ex if you are comfortable with switchgears in power systems , you can put that. I had given machines, circuit theory, electrical measurements and control systems.

Machines :

They started with machines, and asked me to write basic classification of machines, then asked which machine i liked, i told transformers and induction machines. After that they asked me to plot torque slip chara of induction motor, then they will draw diff load lines and ask us to tell the motors response, this lasted for 40 minutes and i had drawn almost three diff curves as every curve was filled with the lines that they drew on top of it ( :))) ). They had gone in depth in induction machines, even they had asked about double cage rotors also, but I had prepared induction motors well enough.

Control Systems :

Then a control system expert asked some questions, these questions will be mainly to find a system equation, with a given input / output response. Or they might give you a circuit and an input plot, you will have to plot the output and stuff, this requires lot of thinking on the spot, have good knowledge on capacitor inductor behaviour etc. I was really tensed, and started sweating, but the panel asked me to calm down, gave me water and asked me to settle down before i start approaching the questions, the person was very kind

Circuit Theory :

Circuit theory was mostly transient analysis, i was comfortable with all questions in this area, steady state and transient responses, graphs etc.

Measurements :

Finally touching measurements, they asked me questions about CT/PT which is always open which is always short and stuff, and final question was if they connections three CT : one in R phase, one in R and Y phase and third in R, Y and B phases, what will be each CT reading. This question i remember well and i had answered it.

Finally after my interview, i went out and was asked to wait, everyone had gone for their lunch and corridor was empty, after some time they called me inside and gave me a white slip stating , that i had a good chance of being selected. I was very happy, and went outside, but there was no one in the corridor, and so i enjoyed the happiness all by myself.

As a concluding remark I would like to tell BARC interview will be one of the best interview that you will attend, It doesnt matter if you get selected or not, because you will be happy when you come out of the room, bcz the panel is very nice. Please do not waste time, and put your hard work for the interview, because you should not feel that you could have cleared the interview, if you had done more preparation. So please give your best shot.

In case you need me to provide specific information about books etc, please ask them in the comments, I will reply one to one. Thank you and all the best

My experience during NPCIL INTERVIEW

This was the first PSU interview  that i had attended i my life, it was in NPCIL guest house in Anushakthi Nagar Mumbai. It was a wonderful experience, the interview that i had previously attended was for a campus placement in my college for a company called Keane Int (i had cleared that interview) and then for a lecturer post in VIMAL JYOTHI ENGG COLLEGE. KANNUR, where i had worked for 2 years.
The main difference i found between these interviews where that PSU interviews are testing the doubts that we always have in. Our mind but haavent bother to clear, but the other interviews just test what we know already.

The interview process begins with the document verification which takes lots of time, then we are guidedd to another building where the panel is ready for us, again after some waiting the fun begins.

I expected about 4-5 people, but the panel had 7 members, initially they asked the expansion of my college name and then asked me to write 5 subjects of my interest. I gave machines, circuits, controls and power systems.

The person told me ok sit forward lets start with network first.

Q.1 what is the input voltage and current waveforms for an RL circuit.
The answer is quite simple we have to tell it using some transient analysis, but then they modified the circuit in such a way that i had a capacitor and inductor in parallel after switching action, and they told me to draw the current waveform for inductor, i was busy thinking about. First order circuits and gave a blunder answer......
The important thing while answering such questions. Is that we should think whether a concept. Can be applied for such a circuit, i was busy thinkng first order and that was my problem.....how can you use first order analysis for a circuit that has two energy storing elements,,,, it is a second order system and assuming they are ideal it is an undamped circuit and so the current would just have osciallations.

Q.2 what is thevenin theorem and a problem was given...
Now the explanation is easy but the problem is a tricky one which tests us.. Now in such problems if we are not able to make out the answer in one go, they would actually ask us if you got an answer for e it. Was 0... Now that is a misleading one never believe it, just understand that you have made a mistake and think strongly again.

Q.3 why do have different current names such as breaking current, making current rated current for circuit breakers when for numerical calculations breaking and rated currents have same values.....

This question was where i was caught.... I have no. Idea.....
Q.4 explain the torque slip. Chara of induction motor without help of equations....
This was easy.....
Q.5 what is the variation in shape of torque slip chara if. Stator resistance is increased.....
I made a stupid answer here which i still wonder how i gave,.,,, the answer is easy...variation in stator resistance is nothing but variation in appiled voltage so increase in stator resistance is nothing but decrease in applied voltage.......

The important thing i guess is to keep a cool mind... And some acquire confidence, because all answers appear in front of us when we think with a cool head.. But its difficult to do it there.. But i guess practise would help....

Being an aspirant

Being an aspirant for gate and i e s exams is not always easy, and thats why maybe i am posting this blog as i am in that situation,  a bit of writing always helps. There are usually not many good sites where u find good tips that would help practically to help us attend interviews and to understand what questions they might put up against us.
Usually what we all face during this situation is a kind of fear that will we be able to achieve our goal. Being the part of a section of students who have got their education from self financing colleges we all try to get a good idea of our subjects from the 5th year of engineering that we take from any of the coaching institutes. I think its always a good idea to take some coaching as it would help/us to be aware of what we have not studied till now, of course it is not a excuse to not to study in the regular college time, but of course as i mentioned earlier i am not theorotically speaking im talking about the practicallity of things and we all know what we used to do in the regular college.
I would like to share some experiences that i have had during my preperation, its not that i am an achiever but maybe i just think some one would be helped
